Acqua al 2 DC – Aliya Levinson

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Recent winner of D.C.’s 2nd annual Hilly Award, when it comes to the dining scene in our nation’s Capitol, Acqua has quickly achieved the pinnacle.

Acqua al 2 is not Olive Garden. You won’t contemplate catapulting an overcooked meatball at your waiter, and you won’t be served anything akin to mom’s generic eggplant parm. You may, however, find your mom sitting at the next table over. That is, if she can get a table.

A “New” Take on an Old Question – Aliya Levinson

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Happy hour with my girlfriends post the 9-5 workday grind is the most tranquil part of my day. But then again, how can conversation, plus a glass of wine, not easily be the cherry on top of your Monday (or Wednesday or Thursday) afternoon?

Fun & Love Growing Up – Kelsey Grubbs

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Peter Pan may have arguably been the happiest kid ever created in literature. But there is one thing he lacked – love. Wendy was willing to give him love, but in order for Peter to accept it, he had to ‘grow up’. Contemplating his predicament, Peter replied “to love would be a great adventure”.  Ultimately the impending responsibilities (and perhaps psychological underpinnings of his lack of adult role models) scared him into choosing Never Never Land over the unfortunate Wendy.

Summer Vacation 101: Don’t Plan Anything – Liliana Leon

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

One thing that I learned all summer long was to avoid the To-Do list and the check-list of things that should have been done. Maybe things would be different for someone whose an only child and perhaps lives somewhere in the middle of Omaha (no offense to any of my readers), but the truth is that I am a 23 year old Hispanic with about 250 family members (not counting the family left in Mexico, Miami, and God knows where else my family has emerged to!). Trying to get something done when you have invitations to wedding, birthdays, baby showers, and your aunts and uncles homes every other day to eat carne asada with rice and beans can be challenging.

Change Is Good – Natasha Bouknight

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

In the words of Jay-Z, “Guess who’s Biz-ack?” It’s been a few months but here I am, and I have so much to share with all of you. Now you know how I’m always talking about sisterhood? Well recently my partner of KayTee’s Treasure Box and I decided to do something special with the women we know. We wanted to do something different that would not only celebrate women but also encourage and empower them as well. Thus, we hosted our very first Tea Party, and I must admit, it was Fab! We called it “The Mad Hat-Her Tea Party” and the theme was, “Change Is Good!” It seems that everyone I know this year so far has been making or has made some type of change for the better (I, myself, included).

Everyone was required to wear a hat and they all looked lovely. Our guests included women from ages 26 to 70 plus years old. We had a full program with a welcome address, games, an open discussion and a closing. The wait staff took orders and served us desserts prepared by the fabulous pastry chef Kyla Kelly and sandwiches prepared by my very own Anthony Lezama (whom I manage). Eveyone received gifts from Swarovski Crystals, New Life Nails, KayTee’s Treasure Box and fellow Label Girl Sheena Foster’s Company, Making Moves in Heels. The prizes for the games were gift certificates also donated from Making Moves in Heels courtesy of Sheena Foster.

Cocktails and Christmas Lights: Sex and the City Village Style – Hannah Ongley

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

When I go grocery shopping, my receipt usually reads about five items long. Of these five items, there can always be found instant oatmeal and coffee, accompanied by the occasional bag of frozen bagels or microwave dinners. Needless to say, I don’t like cooking. It’s not just that the only table in my apartment is outside and used primarily for empty wine bottles or that cockroaches hang out in the kitchen more often than I do; it’s simply that I love eating out.

Sure it tastes good and it’s easy, but it’s also the social aspect. It’s fun. Food is fun to eat, and friends are fun to talk to. Wine is fun to drink. Food is always better when eaten with company and served with or preceded by alcohol, a theory which seems to have firm backing in the 3am crowds swarming fast food joints that would probably be more likely to deter than attract customers in the cold light of day.

Label Girl Hype Presents: Natasha Vianna

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Combine sassy and savvy and add a touch of chic and you’ve got me.  From French fashion to American Apparel, I have acquired an interest for everything in between.

At the young age of 22, I have gained a deep appreciation for the entire fashion industry, including the designers who unveiled new concepts and the designers who are just now beginning their legacy.

All of this is more than just fashion, it is everlasting art. Style and self-expression go hand in hand helping individuals set themselves apart from the person sitting beside them. We are all the same, but we all seek unlikeness.

Miss Hoe Opening Party – Fashion, Festivity and Fantasy | Hannah Ongley

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

If there’s two things I love significantly more than other things, it’s fashion and parties. And judging by Thursday night’s turnout at the opening party of Miss Hoe in NoLiTa, the sole boutique of local designer Abby Hoe, the vast majority of New York females hold a very similar opinion. I feel we also have the best standards by which both parties and fashion should be rated: Parties are always better when there’s champagne and red velvet cupcakes, and fashion is always better when it’s fresh, original, and made with love.

Drink and Dive: Embracing the Seedier Side of NYC Nightlife – Hannah Ongley

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Manhattan’s East Village, which I am lucky enough to call home, boasts the highest density of bars in the city, if not the world. There are lounge bars, hookah bars, cigar bars, sports bars, karaoke bars, dance bars, tapas bars, college bars, blues bars, photo booth bars, gay bars, wine bars and even a secret bar you have to enter by passing through a telephone booth behind a hot dog joint.
