If you haven’t heard of Robot & Brucling yet, you must be out of the loop. 2010 is the year of accessorizing and its vital part in the fashion world is only going to expand in 2011. I had the opportunity to chat with Robot & Brucling about their career, their upcoming collection and their advice to new designers.

Q. Robot & Brucling, how did you choose this career and when did you realize it was going to be successful?

A. We didn’t exactly choose Robot&Brucling as a career; it was for self since we wanted to design our own clothes. The people elected us, if you know what we mean. Success? Probably when our first to-be client shouted at us on the corner of Prince and Broadway in Soho about one of our early bow tie designs, now named Pigalle.

Q. Who are some of the celebrities you have accessorized?

A. We have accessorized T.V. personality – Tila Tequila, singer – Steph Jones, and singer – Tank.

Q. Who would you love to collaborate with in a future project?

A. Chanel, Rick Owens, and Louis Vuitton.

Q. Some of my favorite designers too! So the upcoming collection is launching soon. Can you tell us about inspirations behind it?

A. Think Cold, Hard, and Year 2050 Militant.

Q. Sounds futuristic! Where do you hope to see your brand in 5 years?

A. Established and on the runways of Paris and New York City.

Q. If you had the opportunity to design a custom piece for one person, who would it be?

A. Karl Lagerfeld

Q. What an amazing man! His choices are setting forward a new fashion standard as an icon. In your opinion, whom do you consider the fashion icons of 2010?

A. Rihanna who is mad cool, a sweet girl and we love her, Lady Gaga who is a fashion maniac, Janelle Monae who is very 1-side of Robot&Brucling, and unfortunately no men in 2010.  Women are leading the way and it will reflect in trends.

Q. There are hundreds of entrepreneurs trying to emerge their brands in the industry on a daily basis, what are some common mistakes new designers make when entering the profession?

A. Trying to be an overnight legend is the biggest.

Q. What’s your advice on how to avoid this mistake?

A. Time should be taken developing a brand, its image, and the business side of the deal.  You’ll run out of breath in this race rushing.

Q. What advice would you give these young designers about chasing after their dreams?

A. Firstly believe in yourself and your talent. You will need your own push along the way; it won’t always come from others.  Do not be afraid to fail, it’s the way to succeed; weed through the wrong ways to find the right.  Also, educate yourself in your field and take your time.

Thank you Robot & Brucling!
